Compost & Food Waste

This lesson will focus on the composting process, making compost in an urban setting, and its use in the garden.
Students will explore information related to composting and the environmental effect of food waste.
Explanation of composting requirements: carbon/nitrogen ratio, moisture, timing and phases, acceptable compost materials, and indicators of imbalance.

Activity

Students will build a composter next to their garden.
Students plant their propagated plants from the previous lesson.
The community can discuss a public outreach campaign to address food waste in their community and encourage use of the composter.

Objective

Students learn to transform food waste into nutritious soil and start and maintain compost.
