Garden Design

Lesson 1 - Education

Garden Design

Introduction to gardening and the components of a gardening ecosystem: soil, water, plants, pollinators, pests, and biodiversity.
The community will craft a vision for the garden by assessing available resources and being trained in garden design strategies: desired plants, available space, climate/water, maintenance level, season, and materials. Students will also be exposed to the different types of urban gardens that exist around the world: vertical gardens, hydroponic systems, raised beds, rooftops, etc. The lesson will include facilitated discussion on the benefits of being a gardener and having a garden space in the community: practical skills, green spaces, and community opportunities.

Activity

Students design their own gardens and label plants, engaging them in the design process. Instructor will facilitate/guide toward a joint decision on garden design and dimensions based on available resources.
