This is achieved in an interactive manner that includes hands-on workshops and peer education experiences. The course topics will range from basic introductory garden design, introductory soil science, a compost activity where students build a compost in their campus garden, and all lessons will also include material about the effects of climate change and biodiversity loss.
Lesson 1 - Garden Design
Introduction to gardening and the components of a gardening ecosystem: soil, water,
plants, pollinators, pests, and biodiversity
Lesson 2 - Soil & Maintenance
The students will explore principles and properties of soil, its function, and its global
importance.
Lesson 3 - Plant Propagation
Students will be introduced to various methods of plant propagation: seed sowing,
cutting propagation, and division.
Lesson 4 - Compost & Food Waste
This lesson will focus on the composting process, making compost in an urban setting,
and its use in the garden.
Lesson 5 - Water Conservation:
Students will learn about the importance of water conservation in gardening and its
connection to climate resilience
Lesson 6 - Upcycling:
This lesson focuses on reusing trash or waste materials for the community garden.
Lesson 7 - Urban Biodiversity
This lesson explores the importance of urban biodiversity and its role in maintaining
healthy ecosystems
Lesson 8 - Harvesting and Food Preservation
Students will now have the opportunity to harvest from their gardens.
